Philanthropy Is At The Heart Of The Woman’s Club Of Carlsbad

Picture
Woman’s Club Of Carlsbad, under the direction of its Philanthropy Committee, supports North County community service programs in the areas of: arts, conservation, education, home life, public issues, and international outreach.  With a desire to help meet urgent, local-community needs, the committee allocates the highest percentage of its donations to organizations dedicated to these current issues.  The committee, co-chaired by two seasoned committee members and made up of nine club members in total, researches and reviews worthy causes throughout the year.  Twice each year, in winter and spring, financial distributions are made to worthy local charities, based on consensus reached by the committee.  The amount of each distribution is based on the monies raised by the club’s Ways And Means Committee fundraisers held during the respective time period.  Additionally, the committee holds member and community drives, where goods are collected and given directly to the benefiting charity.

Impact and Accomplishments:

During the 2020/2021 disbursement cycle, the committee chose to concentrate the bulk of funds on food insecurity issues created by the COVID pandemic.  Additionally, funds were utilized for Teacher and Firefighter Appreciation Gifts to recognize the dedication these public service workers made to our community during this extraordinarily difficult year.  As lockdown ended, it was evident that mental health problems needed to be addressed, so donations were made to help mitigate this important health issue.  Donations, from fundraisers and member collections/drives, were as follows:

September 2020:
North County Food Bank - Food Drive - 1,321 pounds of food collected

February 2021:
North County Food Bank - $1,000
Feeding San Diego - $1,000
Meals on Wheels - Toothpaste, Sock and Valentines Drive – 600 seniors served

May 2021:
Carlsbad Teachers and Firefighters - Appreciation Gifts – 1,128 teachers/staff and 79 firefighters served

June 2021:
Mira Costa Community College - Food Pantry - $1,048
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness North Coastal) - $400
North County Lifeline (mental health services) - $400
